What this day is

Most Shanghai day tours treat Zhujiajiao as a detour. This one gives it the middle four hours, which is the only way the canal town reads as anything more than a souvenir street. The morning stays central — the lanes around Chenghuangmiao, then the rockeries and halls of Yu Garden — before the coach runs west out of the city. You come back late enough that the Bund is lit when you reach it, and the day ends there rather than doubling back.

Good to know

  • Meet at the hotel gate, not in the lobby — Metro Line 10 or 14 to Yuyuan Garden Station, Exit 3, then cross the street.
  • Zhujiajiao is about an hour out of the city each way; that is built into the eight hours.
  • The day finishes on the Bund rather than back at Yu Garden, which suits a central hotel and less so an airport one.
